Vulture February is known for a lot of things. It’s Valentines Day. It’s Black History Month. It is also the month of the Great Backyard Bird Count. My annual count got off to a somewhat morbid start this year when a car hit a deer down the street from me and left the carcass in the ditch. So my first bird sightings the next day were about a dozen turkey vultures perched on the roof of the house in front of the ditch, which let me tell you, is a great illustration of the term “Southern Gothic.” So here’s a list of recommended reading for all you armchair birders. No binoculars required.
